The Emmons glacier is the most common route on the mountain and is guided by RMI. In August many of the crevasses open up to show how large they are. You may have set your tent up and camped on a crevass just one month earlier. You want to start climbing during the night and descend the mountain before the sun has a chance to loosen things up and increase the chance of avalanches and rock fall. I have had piles of rocks go sailing over my head. You need to have your climbing helmet on or quickly available. You also start breathing pretty heavy by the time you are at about 12000 feet : ) An amazing hike / scramble is to Curtis ridge which overlooks the Russel Glacier and Willis Wall. The road to Ipsut creek is out, but there are two other ways to access it. It is a view that you will never forget. The scale is gargantuan. Also, it is worth looking at the Cowlitz glacier from the climbing camp accessible from the main lodge.
