    Description:

    This is a block of the famous building stone but probably did not 'ring true' when first quarried, indicating a crack in the block, hence it being left behind.

    Description:

    The quarrymen had to cut through the Hard Cap, a thick algal limestone, before they could reach the Portland Stone below. The waste blocks were lined up in dry stone walls known as 'beaches'.
