- Description
-
This is an assembled panorama of 119 photos of the view from the Crazy Jug viewpoint of the Kaibab National Forest in Northern Arizona. The Forest shares a boundary with Grand Canyon National Park. There are hiking trails nearby into remote portions of the Grand Canyon.
Crazy Jug is remote - it requires a 32 mile drive over gravel road from Jacob Lake - but it is an unforgettable sweeping viewpoint. It can be reached in an ordinary 2WD sedan but perhaps not easily after very heavy rain. You can easily check on conditions at the Forest Service Visitor Center located at Jacob Lake, AZ. Crazy Jug is as spectacular as Point Sublime in Grand Canyon National Park but does not require the high clearance 4WD and rugged, bumpy drive. Parissawampitts viewpoint is nearby and should also be seen.
This point features great views and good access at an elevation of 7,500 feet. Pinyon pine, cliff rose, and some ponderosa grow here. A walk of 50 feet from the parking area leads to the expansive overlook. The Colorado River comes out from behind the Powell Plateau, wraps around Great Thumb Mesa, then winds far downstream. Dark, forested volcanoes of Mt. Trumbull and the rest of the Uinkaret Mountains rise to the west. Directly below are Crazy Jug Canyon, Fish Tail Mesa, Tapeats Amphitheater, and other parts of the Tapeats Creek drainage.
