The Sanctuary of the Great Gods, situated on the island of Samothrace, Greece, was the site of an important mystery cult in ancient Greece. I am working as part of a team of archaeologists investigating questions about the site, the cult, ancient Greek architectural design and building construction, and the relationships to ancient Greek history. We are beginning to bring a number of technologically advanced tools to exploration of the site. GigaPan photography is one such tool that we are using to document the state of the site. We are incorporating these images into a geographic information system. As repeated photographs are taken over time, we can begin to see the effects of weathering on the site, and can document this weathering as part of the GIS.
