The City of Kiana which was incorporated in 1964, is found on the Alaska map where the Kobuk and the Squirrel Rivers meet, just about 57 miles east of Kotzebue. In the last census, the population was 399. In this photograph, we see the front of the clinic on the left and the school on the right. Kiana also has city offices, a Post Office and three general stores. On this day, a moose was wandering around the Post Office. Like the other villages in the Northwest Arctic Burough, there are no roads to Kiana. The road to the left leads to the airport. You can fly to Kiana year round. The roads to the right lead to the riverbank. In summer a boat or barge can bring you here. In the winter, people can travel between villages by snowmobile.
