North side of Cyprus on the Kyrenia mountain range. The castle was originally a monastery. Later fortified by Byzantines, it formed the defense of the island against Arab pirates raiding the coast. Some sections were further upgraded under Lusignan rule. The date of its construction is not recorded, but probably it was in the late 11th century. Alternatively, the building of the castle may have formed part of the measures taken by the Emperor Alexis I for the greater security of the Island, following a serious revolt in 1092.
