Full title: Balancing the Time, What Are Chinese Investing?
Extended title: Examinations as the Barrier to the Transformation of Chinese Secondary Education
Abstract: A revolutionary reform of secondary education policy has been implemented in China since 2004. The traditional teaching and learning in Chinese high schools is a teachers-giving and students-accepting relationship. However, the New Curriculum (NC) advocates changing the teachers? position from a knowledge-provider to a conductor who arouses students? creativity. Through analyzing 16 demonstration lessons from 12 high schools in Jiangsu province, China, the scope of teaching and learning methods which the NC promotes has been sketched. Furthermore, the implementation of the NC reform also meets a lot of challenges such as the time control of class discussions and student activities. This research points out that the main resistance for NC in China secondary education is the College Entrance Exam, and it mainly focuses on analyzing the problems occurred during the transformation of teaching methods. The existence of this one-chance exam compels the teachers to implement the idea of the NC under limited conditions. Developing the NC and the College Entrance Exam in China is still ongoing and now it is the fourth year of NC has been implemented. This research also creates the Box Model to help analyzing and understanding the relationship between NC and College Entrance Exam.
