An estimated 90% the R5 ( M-tropic, monocytes / macrophages ) is found in acutely infected patients. This strain binds to CCR5. Other strains are R4 which bind with CXCR4 and R5X4 strain ( dual-trophic ) which binds with both CCR5 and CXCR4. pages 248-9 Kumar et Al, Pathologic basis of disease 7th edition 2005.
