Dimmeys department store has been an icon in Melbourne, Australia since the 1880's. This history has been captured in a mural painted on the east wall of the store.
The mural, completed in 2005 by Haydan Dewar, colourfully depicts characters and moments form Australia's history, including: Ned Kelly, the Eureka Stockade, the exploration of Burke & Wills, Vegemite and Weet-Bix, the sporting exploits of Roy Cazaly, Phar Lap, Don Bradman, Jack "Captain Blood" Dyer, the emergence of Dame Edna Everage, the Olympics, the first Holden, Skipping Girl Vinegar, the Arts Centre, Count Down, Skyhooks, the Cat Empire, Heath Ledger and Eureka Tower, to name but a few...
While the store's clock tower and facade are heritage listed, the mural enjoys no such protection and is in danger of being demolished when the store closes in July 2009.
