Cathedral of Brasília

Following the main axis you will come to Brasilia’s Cathedral, a striking building, by Oscar Niemeyer, whose arched columns sweep up from the ground. His 1958 is an explosion of light framed in a crown of thorns. The mostly underground cathedral has sixteen curved columns and a stained glass interior.
Standing near the entrance are four large statues known as the Four Evangelists. These sculptures were made by Alfredo Ceschiatti, with the help of the sculptor Dante Croce, in 1968, as well as the three sculptures of angels, suspended by steel cables inside the nave. Having an oval form, the Baptistery has its walls covered by a panel of ceramic tiles painted in 1977 by Athos Bulcão. The local architecture is completed by a bell tower. Its four big bells were donated by Spain.

Catedral de Brasília ou Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida
Projeto do arquiteto Oscar Niemeyer, sua planta é circular sem a fachada principal. O acesso ao seu interior é feito por uma passagem subterrânea. Possui 16 pilares curvos de concreto. Na catedral encontra-se um expressivo acervo de obras de arte: no lado externo, as esculturas dos quatro evangelistas, de Alfredo Ceschiatti com ajuda de Dante Croce, assim como os anjos que ficam no seu interior, além das pinturas de Di Cavalcante, os vitrais de Marianne Peretti, e um painel em cerâmica de Athos Bulcão, no Batistério.
Oscar Niemeyer:
"Na Catedral, por exemplo, evitei as soluções usuais das velhas catedrais escuras, lembrando pecado. E ao contrário, fiz escura a galeria de acesso à nave e esta, toda iluminada, colorida, voltada com seus belos vitrais transparentes para os espaços infinitos."
"Eu quando fiz a catedral eu não queria fazer uma Catedral como as outras, belíssimas, escuras lembrando pecado * Eu queria fazer uma catedral diferente. eu fiz a galeria em sombra e a nave toda aberta para o espaço. E a Catedral ficou bonita. Era a procura da terra com os espaços infinitos."
