In this Image I have created a dual scan image in that the top section displays an image take from MSL curiosity rovers mastcam viewing the trench area that precedes Mt Sharp and the rest of the image is an aerial view taken from the MRO Mars probe.
You will soon relate to both images and you will notice a very strange pattern of what at first appears to be dense cratering but in fact is possibly fluvial deposits from a time when Mars was quite young.
One possible explanation for what we observe here at Gale crater is that the original impact would of created a massive amount of heat that would of taken a long time for the impact debris and material to cool down and hydro-venting would of occurred for some considerable time.
In this image we can determine that volcanic tube rings are visible that seem to be high in metal content which would be consistent with a nickel iron meteorite impact and this is why Gale crater is great for studying this type of geology though it would not tell us a great deal about Mars surface pre-impact era.
I suspect also that the lake and water features that are visible around Gale crater would only of existed at the time of the impact and for a set time their-after as this area would of been rather similar to a hydro-venting water system like we find at Yellow stone national park and this is why we also find high sulphate content in the surrounding area.
