In Catalonia we have a network of regional archives found in villages and cities throughout the country tasked with preserving our heritage. In medieval times a strong Jewish community could be found in Cervera, a town deep in the Catalan mainland. Deep in that village’s archives many Hebrew and Jewish medieval heritage items can be found, and among those there are three remarkable Ketubah documents.
Ketuba are Jewish prenuptial agreements and these three were preserved in excellent condition as they had been recycled as makeshift covers for legal document archives. As it can be appreciated in this picture www.calidos.cat/gigafotos/acsg/ketubah3/ketubah_3_revers.jpg Will open in a new tab or window Will open in a new tab or window Will open in a new tab or window the fact that they had been used as binding material actually helped in preserving them up to modern times.
