This panorama comes from a glacier at Creswick Gap in northwestern Palmer Land in the southern Antarctic Peninsula. My student Amanda Savrda and I sampled crystalline rocks from this region as part of our larger NSF-funded geology research project that we are undertaking as part of the International Polar Year. After collecting the samples identified in this Gigapan, one of our British Antarctic Survey field assistants fell through a snow bridge over a crevasse, plumetting about 5 meters downward, as Amanda stopped his fall by self-arresting in the snow. The footprints tell the story, a longer version of which can be found at the project webpage: www.geol.sc.edu/barbeau/ipy/index.asp
