Description

Believe it or not the is straight out of the camera. To capture this image I used an Arca-Swiss RM3Di technical camera with a PhaseOne IQ260, 60 megapixel digital back. The lens was a Schneider 72mm Copal lens. This camera back offers amazing dynamic range. That's pretty obvious in these photos. There were challenges in capturing this panorama and the first one was the fact that there were 9 stops of difference between the tones in the clouds and the foreground. To solve that problem I used three .9 ND Grads made by Lee Filters with all of then stacked together. That helped cut down the strong light of the sun and clouds. Amazingly, only 5 images were used to make the panorama. Remember that this is only a 72mm lens on a medium format camera, which is equivalent to about a 50mm lens on a 35mm camera. I cannot praise the Arca-Swiss system enough. It creates razor-sharp images every single time. FYI: In the right side of the image you will see the cranes that offload cargo in Long Beach Harbor (San Pedro). Those cranes are 22 miles away... and this is a 50 mm equivalent lens.
