I had my exposure locked and halfway thru my series of pictures the sun came out, becoming much brighter, and completely washed out the right hand side.     I have paused some gigapans and changed exposure. I think it works better than using auto exposure. I encourage you to try it out. On a gigapan I shot, it was getting dark, and I not only changed the shutter speed, but I also had to increase the time-per-pic, because the new shutter speed was so much slower. Notice how the lights in the windows are so much brighter at the right edge than on the left. See: gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=1705
