Description

A test shot of Clumber Park Church near Worksop, Nottinghamshire, UK

This was taken from a distance to test the use of a 2x extender when added to a 200mm lens. The resulting image is not as sharp as I would have hoped for, which given the use of the extender is not surprising. Whilst the overall image itself works, the ability to zoom into the image is lost compared to using the 200mm lens on its own.

@Tom Nelson I looked at sharpening the image and whilst some of the buildings improved, the detail in the trees and people actually got worse. I have since done some single test shots and come to the conclusion that images without the 2X extender are slighlty better (although more pixelated) that the blurry images created with the extender when zommed in at the same level of detail. I have a F5.6 300mm lens to test next so will see what the difference is with that compared with the F2.8 200mm.

I fear your assessment of the 2X is correct, though you might try some aggressive sharpening to the source images to see if that helps.
