Description

Cross-sectioned "pillow" (soft sediment deformation) of sandstone with internal (deformed) laminations from Corridor H, West Virginia. Devonian Hampshire Formation. The sample was collected at the same site as this outcrop GigaPan:
www.gigapan.com/gigapans/111262
The sand was deposited atop squishy mud, then sagged downward in a series of curved linear droops. These weather out positively (i.e., at the expense of the shale above and below) and occasionally fall out where they can be collected by enterprising geologists. This sample was cut (by rock saw) perpendicular to the axis of the sag, and then polished.
