Rhosydd slate mine incline wagon by Willy Eckerslyke

Rhosydd is one of the larger slate mines near Blaenau Ffestiniog, North Wales. Of the original 14 levels, 5 are permanently flooded and around 100 chambers are still accessible. This incline is unusual in having wide gauge rails carrying slate trucks on a wagon while a heavy counterbalance wagon ran on narrower rails set between them. The counterbalance wagon, called the "Mochyn" (Welsh for pig) weighed around 7 tons and passed underneath the main wagon that we see here. 2 sets of turntables on the wagon would have allowed slate trucks to be aligned to side rails at different levels.
