Mount Teide from Las Cañadas caldera rim by Mark Vanstone

Mount Teide is an active volcano on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. This view of Teide was taken looking north from the rim of the caldera above the town of Vilaflor. The view encompasses Teide, Pico Viejo, the floor of the western part of the caldera, Los Roques de Garcia - which are the plumbing system of the ancient Las Cañadas volcano, hydrothermally altered green rocks called Los Azulejos on the edge of the caldera floor and the caldera wall itself. The floor of the caldera was once over a kilometer below the level of the caldera rim, but that has been partially filled by material from the caldera wall and volcanic material from Teide and Pico Viejo. These volcanic, alluvial and scree deposits can be seen in the image, along with individual lava flows on Teide and the sparse vegetation characteristic of the caldera floor.
