Byodo-in Temple, Uji, Japan by T. E. Smith-Lamothe

This ancient temple (built 1054) and grounds is located in Uji, near the riverbank. In architectural circles, it is a nearly perfect composition of symmetry and grace, complete with reflecting pool to enhance the experience. Made entirely of wood, and with nearly no nails, it has survived in a region where earthquakes are common. This building is on the reverse of the 10 yen coin, so is exceptionally well-known throughout the country. The main hall is called the Phoenix Temple or Amida Temple because of the phoenix figures on the roof and the seated, gilded statue of Amida Buddha inside. In 1994, this was designated as an UNESCO World Heritage site.
