In the Forbidden City, the ancient residence of Chinese Emperors, the Emperor Qianlong had this large ceramic bas-relief mural done in 1773. It is 20.4 meters long by 3.5 meters high with some relief as high as 20 cm proud of the background surface. Nine colourful dragons are represented along with mountains, clouds and the sea. The dragon has long been a symbol of Imperial power in China. These have stood outside in all kinds of weather and sun for over two hundred years and are a fine example of the permanency of the glazed ceramic medium.
