120710 - Churchill Arctic Ecology - Goose Creek -Amanda by aboyd07

-Weather was bright, and sunny with few clouds and HOT
-There was only a slight breeze (slight branch movement)
-Sampled at site from 3:30-5:45 PM
-Area much sandier than anywhere else we’ve been, particularly near the road
-Found an adorable little vole!
-Lots of Willow, Scrub Birch, Dwarf Labrador Tea, White Spruce and Tamarak dominating the area
-About 10% ground cover was dead woody debris
-Formica wasthe most conspicuous ant genre; found beneath dead branches and inside dry rotting logs
-Huge Tabanid presence, but not so many mosquitoes presence
-Lots of Anisopterans flying around with just as many students chasing them
-Bus tire popped…the other 10 people not in the Gigapan are likely behind the bus in it’s shade, which is where everyone ended up near the end of our time there
-Noticeably less lichen compared with the Greig 1 (Cap Merry) and 2 (Churchill welcome sign) sites
-A few Lepidopterans (what I suspect are Greenland Sulfurs)
-Myrmica were found here, one of only a few sites (2?) they have been found this trip so far
-Some wildflowers found were Purple Paintbrush, Dandilion (Common?), Lady’s Slipper and Hedysarum
