The Castillo de Huaricanga is an Initial Period (1,800-900 B.C.) citadel that overlooks the Fortaleza River. The Castillo is made up of a series of structures that together form a platform mound similar to the Late Archaic (3,000-1,800 B.C.) architecture at the site. During the Initial Period and the subsequent Early Horizon (900-200 B.C.), Huaricanga became an important stopping point for pilgrams on their way to the major ceremonial site of Chavin de Huantar. Even today, the Pativilca-Huaraz highway runs directly through the site connecting the coast to the Andes Mountains.
