Stark's Knob is a pillar of both a geologic and historical relevance in the region. This site is named after General Stark, who used the site as a key point of leverage in the defeat of the British Army during the Battles of Saratoga in 1777. Besides its historical relevance, the site is geologically unique because it is formed of "pillow" basalt, which form when lava froms up from the deep vents and cools rapidly and extrusively underwater. Thus, this site contain geologic history of when most of the state of New York was underwater (Iapetus Ocean).
