Tumamoc Hill is an 860 acre National Historic Landmark, research preserve, and archeological site surrounded by urban Tucson. My office is about a quarter of a mile down from the summit at the Desert Laboratory, founded in 1903, the first center for the study of deserts and the oldest continuously studied reasearch plots in the world. It is an exciting time of year: June 25, San Juan's Day, the traditional start of the Monsoon season. The saguaro cacti are in bloom and fruiting and rain is brewing in the east. The spot is the site of a 1500 year-old prehistoric village. Petroglyphs and rock walls are visible.
