Plunging folds and a tear fault at Summerleaze Beach in Bude by Mark Vanstone

Taken from near the lifeguard lookout hut, this panorama shows the interbedded sandstones and shales of the Westphalian Bude Formation in the wave-cut platform of Summerleaze Beach, at Bude, in North Cornwall. The panorama was taken towards the west and the beds have a roughly east-west strike (typically we measured around 070-250). The folds on the beach are plunging towards the west at around eight degrees, but the patterns change about two 70 metres west from the edge of the cliff, where there is a dextral (right lateral) tear fault, with a displacement of around 40 metres.
