Description

According to an article in Le Devoir this industrial structure was built in 1922 by Imperial Tobacco Company of Canada. It was solidly constructed so as to be both earthquake and fire resistant. The tobacco operations continued until the 1950s. In recent years it has been home to residential tenants most of whom are artists or independent workers. However, these tenants are slated for expropriation to make way for urban renewal which includes the demolition of 780, rue Saint-Remi, as well as the concrete overpasses in the photograph. The billboard on the roof shows an advertisement with the words "pas de regret" (no regrets). On the contrary I suspect that many of the inhabitants have regrets about being forced out of their spacious and reasonably priced dwellings.
