Description

Part of urban renewal in Chicago, the old beach on South Lake Shore Drive at 31st street used to be a spit of sand, some beach rock and a urine-soaked field house. Now, the renovation of the south side beach was completed just in time for the NATO convention. The New Harbor includes a futuristic playground with a climbing wall, picnic area, underground parking lot and snack shop - oh yes, and a harbor fully stashed with yachts and boats. Although architecturally stunning to the point of rivaling the beauty of Millennium Park, residents wonder how the city's ailing budget could afford this project that took only about a year to complete. Was it money from converting free parking on the lake to metered parking?
