You can get to Ka‘ena Point by hiking the old railroad bed along the westernmost tip of O‘ahu. The railway leads around from Waianae or Mokuleia, to Ka‘ena Point Natural Area Reserve. The reserve protects the last vestiges of coastal sand dune habitat on the island. The area has recently been fenced off to keep out dogs, feral cats, rats and mice who prey on seabirds that nest in sand burrows along the coast. The site is home to native plants and seabirds, including the aerodynamically remarkable albatross. Whales, sharks and spinner dolphins frequent the shoreline.
