The building, a Beaux-Arts design opened in May 23, 1911 and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1965.
During the 1930s, NYC Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia named the two lion statues: Patience and Fortitude, for the qualities New Yorkers would need to survive the economic depression.
OMG - we'll need new names for the depression of 2008.
