This Gigapan was taken at Mt. Mitchell Scenic Overlook at an elevation of 266 ft which is the highest place on the eastern seaboard, between southern Maine and the Yucatan in Mexico!
Sandy Hook is the seven mile sand peninsula in the foreground that juts out into Raritan Bay south of New York. Explore the view and you can see the Statue of Liberty over 20 miles away, the Verrazano Narrows Bridge between Staten Island and Brooklyn, the Empire State Building in Manhattan and the Parachute Ride and the Wonder Wheel on Cooney Island!
Sandy Hook is a part of the Gateway National Recreation Area and the National Parks of New York Harbor, it also includes Fort Hancock, a disused military base.
This Gigapan was taken using a Nikon D300 with a Tokina 80-400mm at 300mm (450mm @ 35mm equivalent).
For another view of Sandy Hook and NYC taken in 2008 from in front of the Twin Lights Lighthouse see gigapan.org/gigapans/43531

Best guess at the camera position 40.40791N 74.004805W-- hopefully correct within a few meters.
