梅花是中国名花，吴县自古就是我国著名的探梅胜地，环太湖的西山、东山、光福三大景区，共有梅林近３万亩，历代帝王将相，特别是康熙皇帝先后三次，乾隆皇帝共六次到吴县太湖探梅赏梅，历代文人墨客，像白居易、陆龟蒙、皮日休、范成大、唐寅等人，也在此留下许多咏梅佳作。苏沪一带不但种梅、爱梅，而且自古就有春天探梅赏梅的习俗。在吴县环太湖地区逐渐形成了以光福邓尉“香雪海”、洞庭西山“鸡笼梅雪”等为代表的赏梅佳境。
在西山，种梅历史始于汉唐，盛于南宋，当时来高宗南渡，大批北方难民来西山落户。由于梅树易种易管，收入稳定，人们多以种梅为生。千百年来，梅林几度起落，但种植遍及西山，可谓是“望衡千余家，种梅如种谷”。每年早春时节，一进入西山岛，沿途湖畔山岗，漫山遍野的梅花竞相开放，雪白一片，人入林中，如同进入花的海洋，“入山无处不花枝，远近高低路不知”。
