Nature is just outside your door — in your backyard, a vacant lot next door or perhaps a stand of trees down the block.
As envisioned by a trio of biologists and their partners at Carnegie Mellon University's CREATE Lab, the GigaBlitz involves scientists, students and amateur naturalists in a global effort to reveal the extraordinary biodiversity of the ordinary settings where people live, learn and work. Details about GigaBlitz are available at science.gigapan.org.

Caught between the Table View and Milnerton suburbs is the Rietvlei Wetland Area, one of the last (if not the last) wetland in Cape Town that has not been developed. Nearby is an oil refinary adding to some of the many problems conservationist face to keep this area untouched. There are 2 bird hide outs, one located i...

In the west of Catalonia, at 120Km from Barcelona, one can find a vast flatland region, having wide sediments expanses laid over millions of years. Clusters of tiny lakes and marshes have formed naturally over the millennia. In the recent history, a century and a half ago an irrigation canal was built, the Canal d'U...

Wasn't home on the 19th, it rained steadily the 20th through the 22nd. Finally, on the 23rd I was able to take a gigapan. FAIL - my beta unit had a failure. My husband, aka McGyver, fixed it, and I went out again on the 24th. I experienced occasional failures of the shutter snapper, hence had to delete many pictures to...

Is the fence holding in nature or is it keeping out modernity? I chose Madrona Marsh and its adjacent Sepulveda Blvd in Torrance, CA, to show the balance any city has between preserving its natural surroundings and the ever intruding modern world. Nikon P5100, GigaPan Epic100, 90 images. ©John Post

This image was taken at the midpoint of the Hardwood Ridge Trail in Oglebay Park, Wheeling WV. The trail runs directly below a 4H camp, and is less than a mile from the lodge at Oglebay resort. I chose the area because there was a high diversity of both plants and fungi. I have not found any animals in the gigapan y...

I took this panorama together with my companions on December 17th 2011. The gigapan was positioned in the middle of the stream; of course, considering the creek floor bed was shallow and full of gravels, we assessed that it's safe to put the gigapan on. The aim of this gigapan is to show diversity of Indonesian vege...
