Description

The head of the classic U shaped valley of Great Langdale. From the left Crinkle Crags and Bowfell, then the Landale Pikes, with Pike O’Stickle just visble above Loft Crag and Harrison Stickle standing up in the middle of the range. The cliff of Pavey Ark is further right and the top visible on the right hand side of the image is Whitegill Crag, part of the undulating upland area that extends east from here for some distance. The buildings nestling at the foot of Stickle Ghyll in the middle of the shot include the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel and the Stickle Barn, although most walkers will wisely head to the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel which is just visible in the photo further up the valley.

Geologically the area is composed of rocks of the Ordovician Borrowdale Volcanic Group. The view to the left hand side of the image looks towards the probable Scafell Caldera. All the fells in the view are comprised of sequences of interbedded acid to intermediate lavas, ignimbrites and welded tuffs. The interbedded sequences are plainly visible on the cliffs of Harrison Stickle and Pavey Ark where a sequence of lapilli tuffs, volcaniclastic sandstones and pyroclastic rocks with ages of about 449 to 458 Mya outcrop.
