We have sailed around South Georgia and are making one last stop before turning westward toward the Falkland Islands.
Here we have Prion Island with the glaciers and mountains of South Georgia in the distance. You might notice some of the birds in the sky around the island.
The yacht is the home base for the folks of Global Boardwalks, who are building a modular boardwalk up to the bird nesting site at the top of the hill.
You don't see many signs of civilization here, but the island shelters a lot of prions and albatrosses on their nests. There are a lot of people who are curious about the birds. The walk to the top involves some impressive climbing over tussocks and slippery stream beds. There is no straightforward path to get to the top.
The boardwalk is probably a very good addition to the island. It will make the climb safer for tourists, who must now cross some pretty rough terrain to get to the hilltop. It will protect the birds from the tourists who might accidentally wander too close to the birds.
You can see the view from the top of the island on another panorama on gigapan .org
