Mono Lake is a salt water lake located east of Yosemite National Park. This easterly view was taken from the Mono Lake Visitor Center near the town of Lee Vining. The results of late Quaternary volcanism is visible across the view. The dark Black Point Volcano is across the lake in the left center. The dark island on the left is Negit, and is composed of dacite. The light-colored island on the right is Paoha and is composed of lake sediments pushed up by magmatic activity. Some dark lavas on this island are visible in the left background. Lee Vining Creek forms the wooded drainage in the right foreground.
Mono Lake was much bigger in Pleistocene times during the ice ages. Ancient shorelines of this much larger lake, called Lake Russell, are visible across the lake, especially to the left of Black Point. Mono Lake was also much higher in historical times, before the city of Los Angeles diverted water from Lee Vining creek and other creeks draining into Mono Lake and pumped the water to Los Angeles. The lake level dropped precipitiouslly as result of these diversions. Recent legal rulings have restricted these diversions, allowing the lake level to rise one again in recent years.
