vol 3 issue 4This image shows the laboratory at Hôpital Albert Schweitzer. This shot was taken fairly late in the evening, after much of the daily activity had come to a close. The lab technician was finishing the last of the day's samples. The dry erase board on the wall details the recent outbreaks of certain illnesses, like cholera. Besides its campaigns on hygiene, HAS would like to do more to prevent the outbreak of disease. Many of these efforts take place off of the hospital’s campus. For instance, carefully monitoring water infrastructures allows hospital workers to know how pronounced changes in the ecosystem affect water access points in HAS’s service area. During the six months of hurricane season, it is imperative to monitor the spread of disease and bacteria. Outside the laboratory is a sort of mailbox where doctors and nurses are able to come to find out test results for their patients: seehaiti.posterous.com/laboratory
The hospital is currently transitioning into keeping electronic medical records for all of their patients.A renovation of this laboratory space is currently underway. Plans include redesigning the work spaces in order to accommodate microbiology analyses. The renovation, funded by generous donations from Swiss supporters, will set the stage for new capabilities to be initiated and taught by a Swiss laboratory specialist.
