Description

Janus is a high power flashlamp pumped solid state laser used to explore high energy physics at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Janus is a dual beam Nd:YAG laser. Each beam is independent and capable of 1 kJ at 1.053 μm with pulse lengths from about 1 ns to 20 ns

High brightness is achieved by converting relatively long lived flashlamp pulses into a laser pulse 1/10,000 as long in duration.

Light travels one foot in one billionth of a second = 1 ns (one nanosecond)

Optical energy is temporarily stored in the glass until the traveling laser pulse extracts it.
