On Lake of the Woods, a double-crested cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) defends her nest against an aggressive herring gull. Cormorants are common summer residents in Minnesota. They are fish-eaters and have long been considered a competitor by human fishermen. Scientific research shows, however, that they prey mostly on non-sport fishes.

Cormorants live in large colonies in the tops of tall trees and on bare rock-bound islands as you see here. Their chicks are born naked and look almost reptilian until they're fledged. Both eggs and young are sometimes destroyed by marauding herring gulls.

This diorama was constructed by Jenness Richardson and Walter Breckenridge. The background painting is by Edward Brewer.
