- Description

Fifth in a series of pans of exposures of the Talcott basalt (early Jurassic age, ~200 million years old) in Meriden, CT
The lower outcrop (Talcott basalt) isn't really pillowy here - the pillows outcrop more to the left of this pan. The distant upper outcrop (Holyoke basalt) is a slightly younger unit that exhibits columnar jointing - fractures that form as the lava cools and contracts. This is the source of the vertical cracks that are really obvious in the right part of the upper distant unit (between the trees).
