Also known as oolites or ooliths, these little geologic Gobstoppers form in shallow, supersaturated, agitated water far from continental sediment sources.

They start as a tiny grain of calcium carbonate, usually calcite or aragonite. As they roll and tumble in the waves, they gradually build up layer after layer of chemically precipitated calcium carbonate.
