Description

This ~214° panorama depicts Kibo's Reusch Crater, the rim of which is visible here as the high point in all directions; it measures ~850 meters in diameter (Google Earth).

The entire summit caldera is roughly 2.5 km in diameter, and encompasses the Reusch Crater shown here. Being older, the summit crater edge is less sharply defined in most places.

In this panorama the inner-most crater is the youngest, and known as the Ash Pit (named after J.H. Ash; 130 m deep (Downie & Wilkinson, 1972)). Note how sharp the rim appears, which is over 300 m in diameter; this is Kibo's final vent.

Also visible, left of the Ash Pit, is an area known as the Terrace. Fumarolic activity was first noticed here by H.W. Tilman in August 1933 and, along with sulfur deposits, can be readily seen today.

Reusch Crater is named after Lutheran missionary R. Reusch from Marangu, who is said to have climbed Kilimanjaro at least 40 times. On his first climb in 1926 he found the leopard carcass which later captured the imagination of Ernest Hemingway.
