I have the Gigapan App on my iPad but it is no longer working and when I go to the App store there is no Gigapan App. I never received a notice that they were removing it. Does anyone know what has happened?

The GigaPan App will be available again soon! We’ll follow up on this post as soon as we have the estimated release date.

App appears to be working again, although I still can’t find it in the App store. Problem was reported to customer service and it received a case No. When I tried to update the the info in the case I got a popup stating I had to log in. None of my Gigapan passwords worked. It is sort of useless to ask for updated info when there is no way to enter the data.

Hello again, John. Just double-checking that this had been resolved, correct?

Introducing iPan beta http://www.3d-360.com/iPan

A free Gigapan viewer for the Apple ios devices including the Ipad, Iphone, Ipod. It is a touch responsive viewer that runs on the devices Safari web browser and can be installed as a ‘Home Screen’ app so it functions just like a real ‘app’.

This web-app generously uses the Gigapan API and tile servers. It will be available unless availability is requested to cease.

This is not meant as a replacement to the Gigapan.org website, but rather as a new means to bring Gigapans to new devices that are ideal for viewing panoramas, but do not support Adobe Flash. It is not near as complete as the Gigapan website as it does not allow for taking snapshots or commenting.

It runs entirely in JavaScript and PHP. There is a known bug in the ios Safari web browser that causes a memory leak after a certain large threshold of images has been loaded, the browser will shut down.

The underlying code includes the Seadragon tile viewer from Microsoft, for which I have adapted for a Touch environment.

As there is no other way currently to view Gigapans on ios devices, I hereby share this:

When loaded in your Safari on your ios device, make it a ‘Home Screen’ app by clicking the ‘Right Arrow in Box’ icon next to the title bar and select ‘Add to Home Screen’

This web-app has been tested on an Ipod Touch 4th Gen and an Ipad HD (third Gen iPad- glorious display!)

PS, I have never used the Ipad Gigapan app that used to be in the app store as I never had access to an Ipad, so I do not know how it compares, but this web-app works on Iphones too.

Please provide feedback at http://3dpan.blogspot.com/ and enjoy!

Looks like Gigapan.org now features their own viewer for Gigapans on iOS devices, as seen when visiting any Gigapan view page on an iOS device (it will display a link such as http://www.gigapan.org/mobile/iOS/1.0/?id=12345)

Good Job Gigapan! Thank you!

The site I created for viewing the Gigapans on iOS devices is still very viable and has 4 times the resolution as the Gigapan site (as Gigapans script is not supporting Retina display resolution)

Please check it out at:

Gigapans have never looked better than on the Retina display- if you don’t have an iPad 3 when you see one you may want one.

Great work on this, Jason! I’ll add a thanks for pointing to my Castle Rock Badlands shot with your example. I don’t have an iOS device to view these on, but by following your link I discovered that this new addressing scheme also serves as a URL for (near) full screen viewing – something that’s been missing and sorely missed since the website update back in November. That alone is highly valuable to me.

Thanks again!

Thank you Ron, your Badlands has always been one of my favorite Gigapans, for two reasons, first, it is awesome, and second, it has an awesome id (12345). I have one awesome id (77777) http://www.3d-360.com/gigapan/?id=77777, I call it my lucky 7’s.

Google came out today with an image pyramid viewer for art collections which is astoundingly awesome, and works well both in desktop and on tablet. http://www.googleartproject.com/fr/collection/v…

On a side note, I have discovered why the performance drops so severely on the iPad3 Retina panorama display at full screen. There seems to be an Apple Safari bug if the < canvas> tag is at the full width of the screen, everything slows down to a camels pace- but when I reduce the resolution by just one pixel width, everything works great- so I have updated my sites and they now have great touch response on the iPad 3

Great work Jason, thanks for making that.

Couple of questions:
- Is there a way to go back to the panorama selection page after you have loaded a panorama?
- On my ipad it seems to scroll around the pano based on the ipad tilting is this a feature (that can be turned off) or a bug?

Thanks again for the nice browser, it looks great. A large dual touch screen is the ideal interface for interacting with gigapans so I love being able to see them on my new iPad.
